You must apply not later than 90 days before the “due date”, which is either:

  • the expiry of the permit, or
  • a specified date, if the application is to change work in a work programme that must be carried out by a specified date or is a change to the specified date. For example, if your permit certificate specifies that a programme of drilling must be completed within 18 months of the commencement date of the permit, and you want to change either the deadline itself or the requirement to carry out the drilling, then you must submit your application not later than 90 days before the 18 months deadline.

We are in the process of creating supporting information templates to help you apply for a change of conditions. In the meantime, refer to the following documents when gathering supporting information for your application:

To extend the duration of a mining permit you must apply at least 6 months before the expiry of the permit.

To extend the duration of all other permits you must apply at least 90 days before the day the permit expires. If the Minister is satisfied there are compelling reasons why the permit holder could not comply with the above timeframe, the application may be received at a later date, but not later than the expiry date of the permit.

We have created supporting information templates to help you apply for an extension of duration. The template you use will depend on whether your permit is a prospecting permit, an exploration permit, or a mining permit.

We suggest you complete the relevant template and attach it to your online application or email it to us alongside your application form.

Appraisal Extensions

Appraisal extensions will only be granted where a discovery has been made during the current term of the permit and there is insufficient time to appraise the discovery. An application for an appraisal extension of duration will not be granted for the purpose of general exploration work.

Applications for an appraisal extension of duration to an exploration permit must be made at least 6 months before the permit’s expiry date. If the Minister is satisfied there are compelling reasons why the permit holder could not comply with the above timeframe, the application may be received at a later date, but not later than expiry date of the permit.

We have created a supporting information template to help you apply for an appraisal extension of duration.
