Minerals and petroleum regulatory environment
Getting a permit is just one of the things you need to do to start mining. Different New Zealand agencies and stakeholders manage the different regulations and approvals that affect mining operators in New Zealand.
Legislation we act under
We are responsible for administering the Crown Minerals Act 1991, related regulations, and the minerals and petroleum programmes. Collectively, these are referred to as the Crown minerals legislation.
Tools we use to regulate
The information on this page shares our approach to compliance with the Crown Minerals Act (the Act).
The Treaty of Waitangi
Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi is New Zealand's founding document. When administering the Crown Minerals Act we must act in accordance with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi that underpin the relationship between Māori and the Crown.
Who we are and our role
We're part of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). We administer the Crown Minerals Act.
